The Modernist and early Civil Right/Black Arts periods explores the various political elements of blackness and really pushes the envelope in a way not previously seen. The Harlem Renaissance takes the first crack at the redefinition of “colored” , and we see this continue as writers like Lorraine Hansberry, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Audre Lorde and others begin to re-examine what being Black in America looks like and who Blacks are responsible to in their actions, deeds and words.
Essay Prompt:
Using one of the works from Weeks 9-12, write an analysis that examines how the writer presents “Blackness” as more than a just a racial designation. (In week 9-12 we discuss the Modernism and the civil rights movements and also the Black Arts and focus on Audre Lorde).
As the writer, you will establish a thesis that address specifically how you see Blackness being defined by the selected writer. In addition, please make sure that your essay includes the following elements:
What is the writer’s thesis? Is it clearly stated?
How well does the writer support his or her main point? Use specific examples.
How does the writer’s perspective continue and/or diverge from previously explored perspectives?
Introduction- In the opening paragraph, you should identify the works that you are analyzing by title and author. The essay should clarify the theses and issues addressed in the works so that readers who may have not read the literary text would still find your essay to be intelligible.
The introduction should also include a thesis statement that identifies the main purpose of your essay. Finally, use the introduction to grab your reader’s attention; create a sense of expectation that makes readers want to continue on to discover the insights of your analysis.
Body- The body of the literary analysis should develop the thesis in detail by exploring two or three subtopics. Quotes from the literary text should be used to support your claims in the body. However, be sure to avoid writing an essay that strings together many quotations without establishing a context for what the quoted passages are designed to illustrate.
Conclusion- The conclusion should sum up the essay without being repetitious. In the final paragraph of the essay, you should also draw some conclusions on the overall impact of the literary work on you as a reader.
