Assignment Summary: Pick any 1-page or 2-page spread from Marbles and combine your CRIT skills of observation and analysis to explore how its words and drawings work together to produce meanings and effects. [Please do not use 50-51, which is analyzed below.]
Your Lit Lab should include:
A topic or thesis sentence about the overall meaning or effect of the single page or 2-page spread you are analyzing. (Please also tell us the page number.)
Observation and analysis of at least four specific details (visual, verbal, or a combination) from the page or spread. Please write at least two sentences for each of the four details you select to observe/analyze. (Unlike CRIT, you do not need to separate your observations and analyses into separate lists.)

SAMPLE LIT LAB
Topic Sentence: In the spread on pages 50-51, Forney combines words, pictures, and typescript to illustrate that the manic state driving Ellen’s vision of her thirtieth birthday party has put her out of touch with reality.
Observations and Analysis:
Forney elongates Ellen’s arms and legs so that they stretch across both pages in the spread, and also adds a physically impossible loop in both of her arms. The real-life impossibility of having such exaggeratedly long limbs—recalling Dr. Seuss’s Cat in the Hat or Mr. Fantastic in Marvel Comics—suggests that Karen is living in some kind of exaggerated fantasy world.
Forney plays with the size and appearance of the fonts in the large thought balloon that takes up about half of page 51, including using large hollow letters for ALL and 30. The effect, which is almost like a blinking neon sign, conveys instability, agitation, and a feeling of artificiality.
The birthday cake in Ellen’s imagination has a big toothy smile and even the flame above her birthday candle is grinning. This over-the-top personification again suggests that her birthday party vision is distorted by her mania.
The small rectangle in the upper left corner with the words “a week later…” represents the voice of Forney-as-narrator, the person telling the story about her younger self. The consistent modest-sized font with no exclamation marks reminds us that the narrating Forney is in a calmer, more stable place than the earlier Ellen she is telling us about.
Remember not to select this same spread to analyze!

Thesis or topic sentence
Should be specifically focused on the page(s) you are analyzing and should include a specific claim. Avoid overly general thesis sentences that could equally apply to most other pages in the book. The following, for instance, would be too general: “On this page, Forney uses both words and pictures to get her point across.”
