I just need help in editing my literature review. I struggle extremely badly with putting citations in my paper and that’s what I need for you to do. I never wrote a literature review, but my professor provided these instructions to help in the process. Not to be confused with a book review, a literature review surveys scholarly articles relevant to your particular topic or area of research. It provides a description, summary, and critical evaluation of each article. The purpose is to overview significant literature published on your topic.

A literature review is an essential element of a research report because it provides key information regarding the existing work in a field. While it is important to realize that the main purpose is to accomplish the following goals – it is not expected that EVERY goal will be addressed in your literature review. That is to say do NOT consider this a checklist, rather a guide.
Examine work’s contribution to the understanding of the subject under review
Describe the relationship of individual articles to the issue under consideration
Identify new ways to interpret, and shed light on any gaps in, previous research
Resolve conflicts amongst seemingly contradictory previous studies
Identify areas of prior scholarship to prevent duplication of effort
Identify opportunities for future research
Place one’s original work in the context of existing literature

The literature review itself, however, does not present new primary scholarship.

Development of the literature review has four specific stages:

Problem formulation—
What topic or field is being examined?
How does the selected article relate to the specific issues explored in your topic?

Have you included articles from both sides of an issue?

Analysis and interpretation—
After selecting only the articles that support the research goals, focus on reporting the findings and conclusions of that literature

Literature reviews should have the following elements:
An overview of the subject, or issue under consideration, along with the objectives of the literature review. In other words, what do you want to tell your reader with the lit review?

Division of works under review into categories (e.g. those in support of a particular position, those against, and those offering alternative theses entirely). In other words, what are the different arguments/angles related to your topic?

Explanation of how each work is similar to and how it varies from the others. NOTE: Take the time to explain why you selected the specific article in 3-4 sentences.

Conclusions as to which pieces are best considered in their argument, are most convincing of their opinions, and make the greatest contribution to the understanding and development of their area of research. In other words, which articles will you be using to support your ideas?

The hardest part of any lit review is knowing/determining which articles to use. Some topics will have hundreds of related articles – in that case, which ones should be used? In assessing each piece, special consideration should be given to:
Provenance—
What are the author’s credentials?
Are the author’s arguments supported by evidence (e.g. case studies, statistics, recent scientific findings)?
Objectivity—
Is the author’s perspective unbiased or prejudicial?
Is contrary data considered?
Can you find evidence that any pertinent information ignored to prove the author’s point?
Persuasiveness—
Which of the author’s theses are most/least convincing?
Value—
Are the author’s arguments and conclusions convincing?
Does their work ultimately contribute any new information to the understanding of the subject?
