Lobbying and Advocacy
Develop an idea of an advocacy item you want to advance or defeat (you will more formally develop this idea in Module 4). Identify a state representative and senator who would be the champions of your legislation (i.e., sponsors). In addition, identify the committee of the House and Senate you think presents the best chance for your legislation to pass. Finally, identify whether there is already a bill that has been introduced in either the House or the Senate that is similar to your proposed bill. You will have to explain (i) why you selected the state representative and senator who would be the champions of your legislation (i.e., sponsors) (it could be that you know them or you know them to be supportive of your cause); (ii) why you picked the particular committee of the House and Senate you think presents the best chance for your legislation to pass; and (iii) why you selected the bill that has been introduced in either the House or the Senate that is similar to your proposed bill (of course, there may not be such a bill, in which case you will explain that there is no such bill). Please keep in mind that you may have a particular public policy you want to advocate for, but you may also have a particular public policy you want to see defeated.
