Paper #4: Long Research Essay
Overview
Students will expand and revise their ideas, argument, and research from Paper 2 by completing a longer traditional research paper; Your topic should be the same as Paper 2, but your thesis, research, points, and organization may be changed, modified or revised for the longer paper. You don’t have to use the same sources, thesis, or all of the same paragraphs. Some people will have to revise and change their ideas and structure heavily from paper 2 while others may not have to. It just depends on how the final paper needs to be organized and developed. Think of Paper 2 as a rough draft that you now have to expand and revise for a longer paper.

Research Requirements

Your paper should incorporate at least six researched sources. Of these, at least three must be derived from Odum Library databases, and at least one must be a peer-reviewed article. You are not required to use every source you discussed in the Annotated Bibliography, but it would be a waste of time and energy if you ignored most of the research you performed before creating this project.

You must provide a correctly-formatted and complete Works Cited page.

Primary Task

Create a researched argument expanding on the ideas from Paper 2.

Audience

In all cases, your argument should be appropriate for an audience that demands careful reasoning and evidence in support of claims. Beyond that, your argument should address an audience that cares about your topic and can act on your ideas (even if only by changing its thinking about your topic). You should tailor word choices and rhetorical strategies (the kinds of stories or illustrating examples you might include, the assumptions you make about your audience’s values, and so on) to this audience.

Points of Emphasis
Your project must be an argument rather than merely a report of what sources say
Your project must account for all source use, and this requirement includes use of source ideas through paraphrase or summary as well as use of source language through quotations. See the plagiarism note at the end of this assignment sheet.
You must provide a correctly-formatted and complete Works Cited page
Papers must integrate quotes, using appropriate signal phrases; you must respond to ideas and language from sources, showing how and why you’re using the sources and how and why the sources are related to your argument

Language (Grammar and Style Requirements)
Your paper should have no sentence errors (fragments, comma splices, run-ons)
Your use of commas and semicolons should conform to standard American grammar
Your paper should have no errors in subject/verb agreement and noun/pronoun agreement
Your language should be engaging, precise, and concise throughout
Your paper should use appropriate and precise signal verbs as you introduce quotations

Format and Citation Requirements

You must provide a correctly-formatted Works Cited page as the last numbered page of your paper, and your Works Cited entries must be formatted to correspond to current MLA style requirements.

All quotations and paraphrases must be correctly punctuated and accompanied by correct in-text citations.
