HIV/AIDS remains one of the most significant public health challenges in the world, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

Due to recent advances in antiretroviral therapy, HIV-positive patients can now live longer and healthier. In addition, antiretroviral therapy has been shown to prevent the spread of HIV.

In 2017, an estimated 21.7 million people were treated for HIV. However, only 59% of the 36.9 million people living with HIV worldwide have received antiretroviral treatment.

Progress has also been made in preventing mother-to-child transmission and ensuring the lives of mothers. In 2017, 8 out of every 10 pregnant women living with HIV (1.1 million) received antiretroviral drugs.

WHO has issued a set of normative guidelines and supports countries in the development and implementation of policies and programs to improve and progressively expand HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support services for all those in need.

False-positive impact-Don’t have it says yes

False-positive results are quite a rare event, but in a community where very few people have HIV, true positive results are even rarer. In a setting where HIV is more common, a reactive result is less likely to be a false positive. For example, take a test with 99.5% sensitivity and 99.5% specificity.

False negative impact-Have it says no

False negative results most often occur when people test in the first few weeks after infection, during the ‘window period’. After this, they are extremely rare. In most settings, the probability of a negative result being accurate is over 99.9%.
