Please see the rubric and instructions provided below to write your formal post-lab report. If you have any questions about this assignment, you can attend the virtual office hours provided by your TA or Lab Coordinator.

For this assignment, use the data below to write and submit a FULLY TYPED report that is NO LONGER than 6 pages, and this is including the title page. Reports with more than 6 pages will be graded up to Page 6 and any remaining pages will be ignored, thus grade penalties would apply. Please be mindful about this specific requirement.
Attention: Even though collaborative group work and data sharing is encouraged in lab activities, each student must produce their own post-lab reports for which they will be graded individually. The ONLY post-lab report sections allowed to be similar among students are the methods and results sections. Similar, in this context, does not imply identical; that is, two students may have the same data but the way the data is presented in a table or chart should not be identical. Again, the report is meant to be written individually.
We will use Turnitin to monitor plagiarism in this report. Plagiarism or high similarity in lab reports are NOT tolerated in this course. If Turnitin displays that a report is plagiarized, regardless of the matching percentage, the student will receive a zero for the plagiarized sections or the entire lab report. In specific cases, plagiarism may result in a “F” or “FF” for the course.
Follow the rubric below and these guidelines to create your report:
DO NOT write the information provided to you in the rubric in your report.
Each section, following the rubric, should have a header (Introduction, Results….etc.). You can add sub-headers as well if needed. The font for the headers and sub-headers cannot be larger than a size 14.
Use Times New Roman or Calibri as font styles for the body of the report with a font size 12.
Number your pages, but exclude the title page.
Your report has to be double spaced.
The introduction must be written in present or future tense. The rest of the report must be in the past tense using passive voice. This means avoid using “you”, “I”, or “our” in your report.
All the sections should be in paragraph form with the exception of the results section.
Create any tables in WORD and do not copy/paste the tables below to avoid any issues. The tables must be numbered and contain a short descriptive title.
Include ALL the calculations in you report.
Use Excel to create your calibration plot and make sure to import it as an IMAGE in your report. The image has to be clear where all the details can be read. Blurry, illegible, and screenshot images are not acceptable. Label your axis and include units.
Your references (you can use more than 3 if needed) must follow the ACS format. A page can be found under the “Supporting Documents” Module titled ” ACS Citation Sources” where you can find links to help you with the citations. Look at both and use the one that is easier for you to follow.
ATTENTION: USF has a writing studio (Links to an external site.) that is available for free to all enrolled students. You can book an online appointment through their website to get writing assistance or to get your report reviewed before the final submission.
Here is the raw data from the experiment, you will have to finish processing the data and include it in the Results Section:
Raw data:
1. What is the amount in grams of EDTA you will need to measure out to prepare a 250 mL 0.01 M EDTA solution ? The molar mass of EDTA is 374.27 g/mol.
2. Titration Data from three water samples

Criteria Ratings Pts
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeIntroduction
Background: A summary of a real-world example(s) and / or application(s) that affirm the importance / help introduce the chemistry of this lab.
Theory: Provide an overview of the key scientific concepts / theories that explain how the experiment works.
Hypothesis: A hypothesis should logically express what the researcher thinks the overall outcome of the lab should be.
Objectives: The goal to be achieved at the end of each part of the experiment and a summary on how those goals will be attained.
Must include:
-What is water hardness?
-What makes water hard?
– What are the common techniques for water analysis?
-How does EDTA help you determine metal ions in water?
-How does ion exchange column work?

This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeMethods
This section should contain all of the details recorded in your notebook on how the experiments were carried out.
This includes numerical details such as mass, volume, glassware set up, reaction time, trial numbers, etc.
Must include:
-EDTA sample preparation.
-Titration set up and indicator
-Ion exchange column

This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeResults
This section should contain all of the empirical data. Use the provided data to write this section.
The data should be displayed appropriately, i.e. tabulated, graphed, etc. to make it easy for the reader to refer back to it in the corresponding discussion section.
Therefore, each table, graph, etc. should be numbered and titled appropriately.

You should also justify why certain decisions were made when carrying out the experiments (i.e. if there were options for techniques to be used, compounds to be tested, etc.).
-Use the data from result to compare the calcium ion concentration in each sample.
-How does the amount of EDTA used determine the water hardness?
-What is the purpose of using ion exchange column and performing titration again?
-Explain the titration results after ion exchange column and compare to before.

This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeConclusion
A goal of this section is to include a restate the experiment’s hypothesis and objectives.
In addition, a summary should be provided on whether or not your hypothesis was affirmed or denied based on your empirical data.
Finally, briefly outline any major sources of error that could have given unexpected results.
