PLEASE READ EVERYTHING
I have included my past papers and the idea is to propose a novel research idea based on obesity. More specifically to find a research topic idea that none of the papers have addressed. Please also try to follow the citation format of my previous papers.
This paper is based on
guidelines for graduate students who apply for the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate
Research Fellowship Program: Present an original research topic that you would like to pursue as you were to
do so in graduate school. (For our Cancer Biology Course this semester, your topic will be a culmination of your
readings that have led you a potential novel area of study). Describe the research idea, your general approach, and
how you propose to further the field with this work (you can be very general in terms of experimental approach).
Address the potential of the research to advance knowledge and understanding within science as well as the potential
for broader impacts on society. The paper will be based entirely on the primary scientific literature to
support your ideas for a novel area of research on a topic you find interesting.
➢ The first part will be a literature review on a topic in cancer biology behavior that interests you and may
(or may not) complement your series of Mini Papers ~ The work you have done, and papers you have
cited to date on the Mini Papers, may be used in this review of the literature to provide background to your
reader. This part of the paper is to provide a rationale for your research question.
➢ The second part will be a research proposal on this same topic, based on a gap you have noticed in the
literature. We will model the research proposal after the National Science Foundation Graduate Research
Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP), and follow their guidelines for the Graduate Research Plan Statement.
➢ The third part will be your literature cited (this can be listed in smaller 10 point font, and may be single
spaced, but will be part of the four page limit). Please use a minimum of six references in your paper.
Important questions to ask yourself in advance of writing the research statement (adapted for our course)
1. What issues in cancer biology are you most passionate about?
2. How will your research contribute to the “big picture” within the field?
**The following elements should be considered in the review for both criteria:
1. What is the potential for the proposed activity to:
a. Advance knowledge and understanding within the field of cancer biology
2. To what extent do the proposed activities suggest and explore creative, original, or potentially
3. Is the plan for carrying out the proposed activities well-reasoned?
Details: This paper/research statement will be a maximum of 4 pages long, double spaced, per NSF requirements
(NSF allows two pages, single spaced.. I have amended this below). Per NSF: The statements must be written using
the following guidelines: standard 8.5″ x 11″ page size 12-point, Times New Roman font or Computer Modern
font, 10-point font may be used for references, footnotes, figure captions and text within figures , 1″ margins on all
sides, DOUBLE-spaced (approximately 5 lines per inch) or greater line spacing.
The maximum length of the Graduate Research Plan Statement is FOUR pages. These page limits include all
references, citations, charts, figures, images…….https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2016/nsf16588/nsf16588.pdf
