This essay will demonstrate the function and conventions of one of the important genres utilized by your discipline. By examining features of the genre and analyzing the work the genre does in the discipline, you will show readers more about the ways of knowing and the ways of doing within your discipline.

This essay will be written for an audience of Writing in the Disciplines (WID) scholars.
Assignment Rhetorical Situation
Imagine a WID journal has put out a call for papers for graduate students from across the disciplines. The call for papers asks practitioner-scholars to describe one of the key genres in their discipline. The best entries will be used to produce a handbook for writing instructors to use when teaching writing across the disciplines.
The call asks for a description of the genre that includes the typical purpose, audience, author, context, and format of the genre. The paper should use more than one published example of the genre as models.
The suggested format of the paper is as follows:
• Introduction – Describing the genre and discipline
• Section I – The purpose of the genre
• Section II – Who writes in this genre and why?
• Section III – Who reads this genre and why?
• Section IV – Key features of the genre
• Section V – How does this genre contribute to the larger purpose of the discipline?

As a result, I will use this article as a measure of my competency levels by comparing the various skills outlined in the section with what I already know; this will help me recognize the areas that I need to improve.

As such, the article sought to examine the students’ perceptions regarding the utilization of portfolios in the instruction and writing of technical reports. The study participants included computer science students who had enrolled in a course on report writing at a Middle Eastern University. The study involved 300 participants comprising of first- and second-year engineering students with little or no previous technical writing experience. The researchers instructed participants to write experimental lab reports then include a reflection as part of the reports. The findings indicated that encouraging self-regulation helped improve students’ writing skills. As such, this article shares important information regarding self-reflection as an essential component in honing one’s writing skills, specifically in technical report writing. Therefore, I would incorporate the insights shared in this article (self-reflection in writing) into my report as a measure of how to write a useful report.
