Psychology discussion
For this week, you’ll be doing some self-reflection. FIRST, before reading this week’s chapter, take a few minutes to think about what you value in a romantic partner: what are the qualities you look for (hypothetically!) in short-term mates (i.e., a one-night stand or hookup) as well as long-term mates (someone you might want to spend time together long-term and commit to in some way)? For each type of mate, write one paragraph describing the “ideal” qualities you look for in each of these types of mates. Be as specific as you can, and use specific (they can be made-up or real) examples wherever you can. [NOTE: I am not asking you to divulge anything more than you feel comfortable with! Consider “hypotheticals” wherever you need to do so.]
NEXT: Analyze both of your “ideal mate descriptions” from the perspective of the genes v. culture information in this week’s chapter (try to adopt the mindset of an objective observer) – do your descriptions seem to reflect the influence of genes (evolutionary biology/psychology) or culture? Write at least 1 paragraph, being as specific as you can in your evaluation.
