Research Paper

In the spirit of efficiency, you will write your paper on the same general topic as the seminar you led. Your paper topic is rooted in the assigned readings for this seminar, and you are asked to go deeper into an aspect that interests you. This could be a social or technical aspect of the building or project, the impact it had, a philosophical or theoretical idea behind it , even a building typology— the important thing is that you answer: how did it come about and what does it mean? For example, if you choose to focus on Chapter 12.1, you could investigate the great Central Asian observatories that are briefly mentioned on p. 498 and tell us how did such strange forms come about? What did these observatories mean in that particular culture, at that particular time period? To pursue your topic, you can draw from the “Further Readings” at the end of each sub chapter, or the assigned article, if these are pertinent to your research. You may also use other references, but they must be peer-reviewed! Feel free to compare and contrast aspects across cultures by drawing from other chapters in the book, if they shine light on the points you want to make. Because the paper has a limited word count, you need to be concise and clear about your points. Yet, as a scholarly essay you also need to back them up with quotes from the texts you chose to work with, and provide full captions for images you use. There are two hand-ins for this assignment: a. Paper Outline. The outline is like a road map — it should provide a sense of what the paper is about, where it is going, and what the key points of investigation. To write an outline, you have to have done the readings already, and know what author supports which point of the paper. Write short sentences using a bullet for each point you want to cover with a reference attached to it. Each bullet point will then become a paragraph when written out in the paper (number sections with 1.0, 2.0 and subsections with 1.1, 1.2). A good outline helps to keep the paper focused and allows you to do structural adjustments in an efficient way. Include small versions of the images you think you may use. Format: 1-2 pages, 12 pt letter-sized paper. Include a list of references at the end, in author-date format. Label your file as: SeminarGroup #_Outline_Surname _Title. After getting feedback on the outline, each student revises it accordingly and then begins to write the paper where each bullet point becomes a paragraph. Include a title, your name, and a 150-word abstract at the start of your paper, and references at the end. Think about how you can use images to advance your argument. For example, by placing them throughout the text near each relevant point. They can be images or your own analytical drawings, with captions long enough to explain the value of the image to advance the point. Format: 1,500 words and 7-10 images (including captions and image source data). Letter-sized paper (portrait), 12 pt font. For references, use author-date style from the Chicago Manual of Style.
