Module 7: My Mission Statement (graded)
Carla: My immersion experience was incredibly rewarding. After spending several terms learning about the theories which will be employed in direct practice with clients and groups, it was a refreshing change to be able to apply concepts, dialogue and Motivational Interviewing techniques to a scenario involving hypothetical clientele. I really enjoyed the opportunity to debrief following each exercise so that feedback could be shared and so that improvements could be made and implemented. My identity as a student of social work was affirmed during the experience, as my strengths lie in actually performing the work and being able to provide and absorb feedback and suggestions related to my interactions. I thrive in situations such as these, and I was excited to have the ability to be evaluated by members of the faculty who will be shaping my educational experience in the future.

My future career as a social worker is still a topic of constant development, but as of the end of 2020 and the end of this term, I am more motivated to evolve as an activist, an artist, and advocate and professional to sharpen my strengths and develop my areas of struggle. I am committed to fully integrate my interests and passions in a manner which not only helps those around me realize their inherent worth and entitlement, but causes me to reflect upon my own.


Module 7: Concepts, Theories, and the LGBTQ Experience (graded)
Samantha: Hi everyone,

I remember as a kid the word “queer” being a derogatory term you’d yell at someone who messed up on the kickball field or fell at skate park. In the 90’s in Southern California, it was definitely a slur. In more recent years, it’s been being used more and more in the mainstream media. I can see why some members of the LGBTQ+ community would feel uncomfortable with its usage.

The National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA): The Associate for LGBTQ Journalists’ Style Guide updated their entry for queer to say: “Originally a pejorative term for gay, now being reclaimed by some gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and non-heterosexual people as a self-affirming umbrella term. Some people may identify their sexual orientation as queer because they find the other labels inaccurate or overly restrictive… Queer is still offensive as an epithet to many.”

The acceptance of the word shifts with each generation, with younger people being okay with it, to senior members of the LGBTQ community still feeling pain from it (Rocheleau, 2019). As a millennial, the word was a slur when I was a kid, but now I see it more as an umbrella term for anyone part of the LGBTQ community. In regards to our usage of the word, I think we should let our clients let us know if they’re okay with it, and let them lead the way in what terminology we use.

Module 7: Suggestions For Working With Trans People (graded
SkyDawn: Hello Class,


The two suggestions that I like are: 1) Explore the various meaning of the word “Queer”. and 2) Describe how queer theory has engaged with popular culture, biology, and sexology. As a social worker I want to ensure that I am as educated as possible because the LGBTQ+ community is growing and I know will care for individuals that are in these categories. I feel that both these suggestions are very important. Being educated on every part of diversity is key to having a successful career as a medical professional. In any healthcare setting there is so much diversity and everyone is “different” being understanding to the patient’s diversity will help provide the best quality of care. Since the LGBTQ+ community is growing I as a social worker should know about these differences and know how to react to the needs of these people. We as the professional need to be open minded and treat every patient the way that they should be when it comes to their care. Working with members of this community will help strengthen our ties to community because more people will be understanding about how people’s many differences are all normal.
