In this assignment, you will apply critical reading skills to identify rhetorical strategies a text uses to
achieve its purposes. The analysis skills you develop in this type of exercise are valuable because they
allow you to make conscious choices in your own technical and professional communication.
For this assignment, your tutorial leader may provide you with a text to work with.
In your discussion, consider any of the following questions:
Structure of argument
• Which kinds of evidence (e.g., statistics, quotes, personal anecdotes, or stories) does the author
use to support key claims?
• Which types of appeals (pathos, ethos, logos) does the author typically make? Are the appeals
effective?
• Are there instances of faulty arguments that undermine the effectiveness of the text?
Stylistic choices
• How would you describe the tone of the writing? (formal, informal, technical, idiomatic, or
other)
• What choices has the author made regarding mechanics and sentence structure? How do these
choices contribute to overall purposes?
• Are there patterns in the types of wordings (diction) chosen? What effect do these choices
have?
Note: In your analysis, focus on strategies the author uses often and has a purpose for using.
Structure and Content of the Paper
Introduction. In the introduction, quickly set the stage for your analysis:
• Make it clear what the text is. (It is a rhetorical analysis.)
• Identify the purpose of the text
• Identify the assumed audience for the piece.
• Identify the main thesis or argument of the text you are analyzing.
• Provide a brief summary of the content of the text.
• State your own argument, with reasons, regarding the persuasiveness of the text.
• Outline the rhetorical strategies discussed in the analysis in the order they appear.
Discussion. In the discussion, layout your key arguments for the rhetorical strategies along with
evidence from the text. Use strong topic sentences, stating the overall purpose of each rhetorical
strategy discussed.
Conclusion. Conclude by reiterating your key arguments in brief. Length: 750-1300 words (3-4 double-spaced pages)
