To develop your own argument, ask yourself: What arguments do Cassidy, Esterton and Pasachoff use to explain Mileva’s contribution? What events, what aspects of the story do they choose to focus on? Are their arguments compelling? Why do they think the myth endures?

PART ONE –

In this part of the assignment, you will draw primarily on the reading you’ve chose, but you may need to consult other course materials or other reliable reference resources to help gather information. Keep a list of your sources of information and use that to create your bibliography. See below for more details on formatting this part of the assignment.

A. Establish a useful timeline for understanding your puzzle (what are 4 to 6 key dates/events?).

B. Identify a cast of historical characters (to understand this puzzle, who is important? Try to limit yourself to 3 or 4 characters). Give a mini-biography (a short paragraph) for each

that explains their importance.

C. Locate the events and people – where do events take place? in what circumstances? is this setting significant?

D. Briefly summarize the puzzle in your own words. (Hint: It helps to give the puzzle your own title that is descriptive and helps you understand its significance: i.e. “Darwin’s Delay: Why did Darwin refuse to publish his theory of evolution for two whole decades?” )

E. Produce a short one-paragraph summary of your findings in this fact-finding.

F. Include a bibliography for any resources you used. Include the article you chose in your bibliography.

PART TWO.

Drawing on your work for Part One, write a short essay (750 words) on your chosen topic and article. Your essay should open by identifying your topic, and the chosen article, and should summarize the article briefly in a sentence or two. Then, you should turn to your own thesis, the persuasive argument that controls your essay. This argument presents your own analysis of that historian’s work. Use the guiding questions offered in the “choices of topic” table above to help you assess the scholar’s work and develop your thesis. As with your work writing essays on primary sources, present your argument about the article and support it with evidence.
