Social Movements Case Study

Guidelines for Case Study Analysis
Each student will individually submit a case study analysis that tackles one of the two main course areas in relation to a specific case study of their choice.
These general areas are: (1) how do social movements situate themselves within the social landscape, understand the obstacles that stand in their way, and formulate their visions and objectives for change? Within this area, you could focus on: (
a) how do social movements make and press their claims?
(b) how do social movements situate themselves in the larger duration of a struggle?
(c) how do social movements differentiate themselves for purposes of resource mobilization? (2) how do social movements orient themselves towards social change (that is, through radical, reformist, conformist, or a hybrid orientation)? Within this area, you could focus on:
(a) how do social movements position themselves on the question of violence?
(b) how do social movements develop tactics and strategies that fit with their desired path towards change? Please keep in mind that the questions above are just suggestions and there are many different directions that you can go with instead. Working under a general area of analysis, you are required to formulate a research question that is directly tied to your specific case study. The areas above are too broad and general on their own, and you must make your research question focused and narrow.
You must therefore choose a specific case of study. The narrower and more focused the case, the better and easier your paper will be. For example, writing a paper on the civil rights movement in the United States of America is too large of a topic; focusing, for example, on Black Lives Matter in the case of Ferguson is much more manageable. In order to answer your research question, you will be required to present and explain the specific conceptual tools that you will use to 2 answer your question. These conceptual tools must come from the course readings.
Use one of the following readings: • Diani (1992) • Tilly (1993) • Johnston (2014) • Tilly & Wood (2009) • Smith & Wiest (2012) • Maney et al (2012) ****I can provide these readings- whatever one the writer chooses I can attach!!!
You must research your chosen case and include outside sources in your analysis. Acceptable outside sources are peer reviewed sociological articles and social movements’ websites.
The assignment requires one of the following combinations:
• At least one peer reviewed sociological article on your chosen case study and at least one primary source. OR
• At least two peer reviewed sociological articles and no primary sources.
Make the connections between your conceptual tools and the case study. The case could challenge, modify or corroborate the utilized conceptual tools. Therefore, please DO NOT summarize reading/analysis materials. You are engaging in a critical analysis of all the materials, synthesizing all of it within one coherent argument.
In sum, each paper will present the following:
(1) The research question it is asking;
(2) The conceptual tools it is going to use to answer this question;
(3) The case study analysis where you answer your question.
In organizing your paper please include the following standard elements:
(1) A Title Page – your title should be succinct and related to your chosen topic. “Case Study Analysis” is NOT an acceptable title. (2) An Introduction that briefly outlines, in one paragraph, your entire argument. (3) The Body, where you go ahead and make your argument step by step. (4) The Conclusion, where you briefly recapitulate your argument in a small paragraph. Please submit all of your papers electronically as a “.doc” or “.docx” file through Blackboard by 11:59 pm on February 16. 3 Each paper must be in the range of 1400-1600 words (12-point Times New Roman font, double spaced). Your papers should include in-text citations and a list of references (please find the APA guide on Blackboard). Please be advised that grammar, spelling, and proper referencing according to the APA guide will be part of the evaluation
