The Saga of the King Hrolf Kraki

Read The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki, pages 1-78 and write a short paper that includes the following three things:
1) Summarize the main storyline concisely (1 fairly short paragraph) with 1-2 citations in broad terms. What is the Saga about? What is it about, broadly speaking? KEEP it short and concise. Remember, a footnote at the bottom of a page can actually point the reader (me) to multiple pages in the book. In your introduction, include a thesis statement. Your thesis should talk about what themes dominate the narrative. The two dominant themes of The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki are X and Y.
2) THE HEART OF YOUR PAPER (2 longer paragraphs). Going deeper: what do you think The Saga is really about? What is this autobiography ultimately an expression of in your view? Choose two themes and provide at least 2 citations for each theme (you can use more than 2 citations if needed). Maybe you think that, when all is said and done, ultimately the treatise is about courage and loyalty. Maybe you think ultimately it is an expression of strength and creativity. Whatever it is – you have to cite from the text what

you mean by these themes. If courage is one of the themes you have chosen, what examples from the text are going to support this? Are you going to try to show the different ways courage is expressed in the work? You have to make a case.
Convince your reader. You are your own lawyer. Defend the interpretation you’re giving me.
There are many themes to choose from. You can be creative and come up with your own. That’s the point: you are the interpreter now. This is your historical imagination at work. This is not an “opinion piece” – it is a historical analysis. Whatever themes you do choose, back it up with citations from the text itself.
Again: do not use any other sources from anywhere other than Augustine’s text. If you do you will not receive a passing grade for the assignment.
3) FINAL PARAGRAPH (1 short paragraph): Why is this text historically significant? What does it tell you about Viking society? You could use at least 1 citation in this part.
You should begin your paper with a sentence that basically tells me what your response paper is about. This is a thesis statement. It does not have to be long and complicated.
