Week 2: Assignment – Embracing Others

All assignment papers in the course should be a minimum of 600 words. There is no maximum but papers in the 600 – 750 word range work well. Students are expected to include three or more quotes or paraphrases from published, reliable literature. Place these quotes or paraphrases in bold. APA in text citations are required.

All references and citations conform with APA format.

Write your paper based on the following:

Think of a specific person with whom, or situation where, you were challenged to practice being cross-culturally brave. With this idea in mind as you write your paper, answer these questions:

Who was involved?
When was this (Were you in high school / before you got married; etc.)?
Where were you (context)?
What happened?
Why do you think it happened?
How did you handle the situation; or what did you do that leads you to conclude that you showed bravery about what it takes to embrace others, despite or because of their difference from you?
What did the whole experience lead to? In other words, explain the outcomes and your takeaways / lessons gained.

Do not number your answers. Rather, present a smooth-flowing singular presentation that incorporates answers to all the above questions. It’s possible though that you could write a paragraph in answer to each question, with your reflection on question seven serving as your conclusion to the entire paper.

Formatting Your Paper
A written academic presentation is a formal document; and so has some rules of its own that are expected. For example, it should have paragraphs. It should be double-spaced. I am outlining here for you what is expected as you prepare to present your thoughts about the week’s topic in this format.

Take care of the citations, referencing the sources that you consulted in thinking and writing about your topic, using the APA style of formatting to document your sources. You will find it on this website, designed to help writers, including student writers such as yourself, with their citations (Links to an external site.). Please click on the link to find forms on which you may enter your sources’ information and so generate the correct way to cite different types of references such as a book, a video, a website or a journal article.

Add the finishing touches to your essay by giving it an identity as follows:
At the center of the document write a catchy title that you are giving your paper (the most memorable titles tend to be no more than 6-10 words).
Under the title, also centered, write your full formal name as you have it in your school records.
Under your name, write the course title (COMM-130-45: Interpersonal Communication).
Under the course title, write the date on which you are submitting your paper for grading.
Create a Running Head (Google it if you are not sure)
Insert page numbers in your document.
Demonstrate your critical thinking skills using one of the following: 1) Sharing an example from your own experience (personal or professional life). 2) Applying the topic to world events. 3) Sharing your own views and opinions on the topic.
