of Bias-Based Bullying Targeting Sexual and Gender Minority Youth—A Qualitative Study of Service Providers and

This study, which concludes that religion plays a role in homophobia, documents bullying trends towards LGBTQ+ teens in

Canada through interviews with teachers and therapists. The authors are experts in the fields of sociology and gender studies.

This peer-reviewed article presented the results of the well-designed, though small, study which collected data from a diverse

population of service providers and used accepted methods to ensure the quality of the data. The Journal of Adolescent

Research is well-respected within the field. The information in this study which connects religious faith to homophobic

bullying supports the argument that LGBTQ+ teens of faith may suffer mental health consequences if they choose to stay

in the church.

Discussion: This week we were directed to find something from the social sciences. My topic is related to why people are becoming less religious, so a social sciences article should have been an easy task. When I began searching, I returned so many results that I wasn’t sure where to go with it. I decided I needed to focus on a specific group so I chose LGBTQ+ teens because I read in another article that this group in particular tends to leave the church and not come back. Once I did that, I had a hard time figuring out which keywords I wanted. It took me a few tries to find something that really worked. I ended up using “LGBT youth AND religious beliefs.” This article isn’t directly about my topic because it doesn’t cover whether or not these teens left the church, but it does give some reasons why they might, which is directly related to my research.
