what were the causes of the french revolution

DUE Sunday April 12, 11.59 pm
Paper guidelines:Title: Please write out the question as it appears on the list of questions, do not create your own title (unless you’ve agreed one with me first).
Length: About 1500 words (approx. 5 pages)
Format: Double-spaced, single-sided, 11 or 12-point type.

Structure: Use an analytical structure – remember, you are answering a question, not telling a story, so bear that in mind as you write. How am I going to answer the question? How am I going to use details to support my answer? Think of key points you will be addressing, and structure the essay around these. Use examples, quotations from primary sources, or quotations from secondary sources to back up your points. Do not just retell events from history – use events as examples to back up your argument. E.g. the Franco-Prussian War – your reader does not need a detailed description of the conflict, but rather, wants to know its significance. Why did it happen? What impact did it have? What does it tell us about the unification of Germany? etc.

Writing style: Use scholarly language. Do not use contractions (“didn’t”, “wasn’t” etc.). Do not use overly informal language (“when Princip shot him, the Archduke was all, like ‘not cool, bro!’”)Do, however, try to write in your own voice.Scholarly style: Use a recognized scholarly style. Chicago style is often used in history, but I do not insist on it, as it is difficult to use. American Psychological Association (APA) and ModernLanguages Association (MLA) are commonly used, and these are Ok to use in your paper. Styleguides can be accesses on the Online Writers Lab (OWL) website: owl.english.purdue.edu/Delta College Library also has useful resources: delta.edu/llic/tlc/academiclinks.aspxCitations: Use footnotes (or in-text citations – check the style guide for which to use) for direct quotation, statistics, reference to a source even when it is not quoted directly, reference to particular historians’ opinions. You do not need to use them for generally-known historical facts (e.g. “World War 1 began in 1914” doesn’t need a footnote; “according to Fritz Fischer, World War 1 was caused by German expansionism” does, as you are quoting someone’s opinion.)

Bibliography and sources: Include a bibliography (this is the same as a ‘works cited’ page), listing all sources you use. Please use at least three sources other than the course book (you can use the course book as a source, but make sure you have at least three others). At least three sources must be printed (book, article – print articles you’ve accessed in electronic form online are fine). The sources do not need to be the same as the ones you included on your annotated bibliography – it’s OK to change your mind! You do not need to include the
annotations in your bibliography. Do not use Wikipedia as a source, although – if treated with caution – it is Ok as a ‘jumping off’ point to lead you to better sources!

Annotated bibliography: A list of at least three scholarly sources (not including the course book) that you plan to use for researching your term paper. To be formatted in Chicago or MLA format, each with a brief paragraph explaining why you will be using that source. Worth 5%.

Deadline: Sunday March 29, 11:59 (See separate assignment sheet for more details)
