Scenario: You are a budding entrepreneur with a great idea, and you want to pitch it on the TV show “Shark Tank.” Your product or service should be something the Sharks want to sink their teeth into.
Create a 1-2 minute pitch of your idea, using the approaches described in the Weekly Materials. For this section, you may either write out your pitch or record it on video. Make sure your pitch includes:
An introduction to yourself and/or your company
A brief, non-confidential description of your product or service
Any differentiating advantages your product or service offers
Financial information, such as how much your product or service sells for (for purposes of this scenario, you can make this information up)
An explanation of how you will use the Sharks’ money (e.g., building your product, hiring more employees)
A call to action
Considering the course materials for this week, discuss the persuasive approach(es) you used and why you chose them. For example, how did you incorporate ethos, logos, and pathos into your pitch?
Hi My Great 505 Class,
This week in our Business Communication class, you will learn the ability to persuade others to understand your viewpoint and agree with you.
In your Discussion post, you will be asked to imagine you are on “Shark Tank” and are trying to (persuade) get the sharks to invest in your ideas and/or company.
If you are not familiar with Shark Tank, you can check these out to get a sense of how a pitch goes:
As you begin your readings (please do not post until you complete this week’s reading assignments and seen our videos) and begin thinking about your Discussion post, I would like to offer you some items that you should consider including in your response.
Remember, this product could be imaginary or one you are thinking of, or even working on. Keep in mind that our posts are not confidential:
• who are you, company name (be personable when you introduce yourself: engage)
• why are you here
• tell me my problem that you want to solve
• introduce your hook
• tell a story; use empathy, get me interested
• describe your product or service
• mention it’s differentiating advantages
• make up data and statistics: is the product in production; is the service being offered; how many have you already sold, costs, profits, revenue, where (city, state, countries); how is it being used; consumer excitement, etc.
• mention how you used ethos, pathos, and logos
• tell me what you will do with the money you get from me, i.e. build the item or App, more marketing, build a factory, speed up production, hire more people, etc.
• describe your persuasive approach/technique and why you chose it
• don’t forget the ask or call to action: how much money you want and what percentage of the business you are offering
• also, don’t forget to say thank you and offer your contact information at the end
Remember, you have 1-2 minutes to make your “elevator pitch”.
This is an imaginary scenario, so use your imagination with the product or service you have invented.
Please include references from both this week’s reading material and external sources and of course use in-text citations.
Your response is due by midnight Wednesday of your time zone.
Please have fun with this discussion and let your imagination run wild. I will only comment on your technique, not on your product or service.
