THE JOURNAL ARTICLE REVIEW:
The purpose of this assignment is to help you understand how research is conducted and reported in developmental psychology. You are asked to read a peer-reviewed article from a scholarly journal in the field of lifespan development. Articles of this type will typically report on original research or replications of previously conducted experiments, or they will be literature reviews in which the author(s) present the results of a literature search on a specific topic. In the latter case, the article will usually be a dissertation on the most current thinking on a specific topic.
TO LOCATE AN APPROPRIATE ARTICLE:
You can browse the periodical room of the college library for journals that pertain to your topic. These can be from a medical, psychological, sociological, behavioral health, public health critical race theory or social work perspective. Reference librarians are available to help with your search.
Either from home or on campus you can search for articles on EBSO Host. To access this site, start at the Library homepage, click on Articles on the left side navigation bar, and click on EBSCO Host when the list comes up. Academic Search Premier or Elite are good search engines to use. You will be directed to a search page. You should limit your search to:
Full text
Scholarly (peer reviewed) journals
Published in the past 5 years
Enter your subject in the search box and click on GO. You will generate a list of articles which can be accessed online. Some are also available in the RCC library; if this is the case, there will be a notation in the search result. You can print out your article from here.
There are probably other search engines you can use, and the reference librarian is a good resource for this information.
Also, if you have questions about the writing piece, the Writing Lab in Coates Hall is available to help. They should have examples of journal articles reviews from my General Psychology classes on file.

HOW TO DO IT:
Here is an example of the proper form for your journal article review. It should be no more than two pages long, typed, double spaced and follow APA 6th Edition Style throughout the paper. This is an example of your Cover Page and make sure you use Running head at the top of the page with a short title name:

Name of Institution (FAMU of course)
Your Name
Start your review with introducing the reader to the following information:
Author(s). (year of publication). Article title. Journal name, volume, number, pages.
Example:
Wood, D. (2003). Effect of child and family poverty on child health in the United States. Pediatrics Sep2003 Supplement, Vol 112, 3, 707-712
Second: Summarize the Article.
The subject of this article is to review the literature on the effects of poverty on children in the United States, including economic, ecologic and family influences. Poverty is defined as “a condition of misery, hopelessness and dependency.” (Heclo, cited in Wood, 2003). This article examines previous writings and attempts to develop an understanding of the role the state of poverty could play in the development of the child.
Next, explain and critique the methods use and the findings presented.
The author selected research articles and other writings from the field for review and analysis. His methods were thorough. His intent was to integrate the findings that had already been reported into a single article that could be the starting point for future research and interventions. Wood found that…………
Last: Conclusion; offer your opinion on the value of the study. Will this study further our knowledge base or the goals of Social Work, i.e., to describe, explain, predict and influence behavior, etc? What does it add to our knowledge of human development and the profession?
