Workshop Exercise #4: Sophocles, Antigone
Q1: Please write a 150 words position statement on at least one (you may write more than one) of the following characters in the play and their investment in the future health of the polis: Creon, Antigone, Ismene, Haemon.
How does your character propose to secure the health and stability of the polis? How does your character define that health? Use at least 2 quotes from the play in your statement to support your claim about your character’s stance in the play!
Please note that you must include your quotes at the beginning and that they do not count as part of the word limit.
Q2:In 150 words, relate one or two of the arguments discussed by Professor Newman in the video lectures for weeks 3 and/or 4 to a contemporary cultural, political or scientific event of your choice. Please explain: 1. what was said in the lecture regarding the texts and contexts of the authors examined and, 2. how it may help us read or analyze this event in a fruitful way. Be specific! You can write about an event in the U.S. or elsewhere in the world; be sure to describe exactly what you are writing about and include a link of information about the event (these are some of the sources where you can look for info and share the links: The LA Times, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Nation, Vox, ProPublica, The Jacobin, Vice News, etc). Your comparison point can be any important bit from any of the lectures for weeks 3 or 4.
